Red and White Winding Ways

A while back I received this copy of “American Patchwork and Quilting Magazine” :

I fell in love with that quilt immediately! It brought to mind that huge collection of red fabrics I have been amassing for several years. I know, how does a blue and white quilt bring to mind one’s red stash? (blush) Aren’t they beautiful?

The magazine article about the quilt pointed out how much simpler the cutting would be if you had an Accuquilt GO! Well, I have an Accuquilt GO! It’s not really pink; the glow is reflection from all those red fabrics in the room.:

I bought it a couple of months ago just to cut strips, mind you. This was an opportunity I could not resist. Off went my on-line order for the die set. Their packaging is so colorful, don’t you think?:

You can layer six fabrics and cut out enough pieces for 3 blocks at once… which is what I did. Did I mention I have a stash of neutrals, too?:

Here are my first two blocks. I think I can do this! It’s not exactly as easy as a four-patch. After all, there are twelve pieces with all curved seams, but it really is not too bad.:

I got so inspired I even went out to my EQ7 software and designed a sample so you can see what it will look like finished.:

Red and White Winding Ways Quilt

Its going to be beautiful. That is why I am going to wash that red stash using Synthrapol in hot water to prevent color running and then I will lightly starch and press the fabrics to prevent excessive stretching on all those curved seams.

I pieced this throw size log cabin style quilt one past November in shades of brown, gray, black and cream batiks.

There are seven rounds of one inch logs for each “cabin” if you count the center.

I used King Tut thread in the color “Cedar” for the long arm machine quilting.

On chilly winter evenings my husband testifies that the quilt is very cozy indeed.

Sedona Star – Pinned and Ready to Sew into a Square

I thought I would show you what the appliqued sections that will turn this quilt top into a square look like after being pinned onto the inner circle. It does look a bit odd and not so pretty. Just wait until I get this sewn in and pressed!:

Sedona Star – October and November Installments

The October and November installments for The Quilt Show Block-of-the-Month quilt, “Sedona Star,” are the corner appliques that are added to take the quilt top from a circle to a square. I have completed all four corners.

I will post a picture after I add the corner appliques to the center circle. This should be tomorrow if we have enough light.

Mosaic Quilt Top Completed!

It’s hard to believe but it has been more than two years since my last, one, and only post about this quilt top. Check my first post dated August 17, 2010. Anyway, I completed the top recently:
IMG_2183

I like it, but amazingly, I made the top to go with some backing fabric I had and it does not go that well with the backing fabric. Should I go ahead and use the planned fabric or buy a different one I like better? Decisions, decisions! In the mean time, I have to decide how to quilt this baby. Take a look at the little “Trips Around the World” within the big “Trip Around the World” :
IMG_2184
They are pretty cool, but play havoc with your strip piecing efficiency. Also, note that the three narrow inner borders and the 10 inch outer border are all mitered at the corners.
IMG_2186
Nice touch if I do say so myself.
Now, back to quilting ideas. For the little squares I am considering a circle within each square just touching the square at one point on each of the four sides, continuous curve or “Terry Twist” continuous curve. For the narrow borders I am considering 1 inch “clam shell.” For the 10 inch gold border I will attempt to design an elaborate feather incorporating nickle sized pebbles.

Also, another big decision is thread. I will probably go with gold Glide for everything or gold Glide for the gold border and a multi-colored jewel toned Lava or Rainbows by Superior for the little squares.
Anyway, here is one more look from another angle:

Added the Triangle Ring

This is it for September. The triangle border is a little wavy, but I think I can handle that when I add the corners in October and November.
