Aren’t these little orange guys just too peculiar?

What to have for lunch?

I know! Toasted turkey and cheese sandwiches prepared on the new/old sandwich iron with lettuce, basil and tomato from the garden.

Starstruck with Borders

I mentioned in an earlier post attending a workshop with Bonnie Hunter, designer, blogger and author.
Well, here is an EQ6 drawing of the version of “Starstruck” I started in her workshop. I added the Freindship Star border in black and cream as a little bit of my own contribution to the design. My finished quilt will be 97″ by 97″. Notice the dark stars and the light stars in the body of the quilt.

Starstruck with Border

Making the quilt involves cutting dark strips of various floral prints ………

IMG_0555

…… and light strips.

IMG_0556

Sewing them together and cutting into squares.

IMG_0547

Cutting out lots of little black squares……….
IMG_0552

and lots of light squares.

IMG_0553

And sewing them all together results in blocks of various color combinations.

IMG_0554

IMG_0549

I need 100 of these blocks to finish my quilt. I will keep you posted on my progress!
By the way, as a by product of all this cutting and sewing and cutting and sewing, you produce bonus half-square-triangles…

IMG_0551

… and pieces that can be turned into four patch units. Isn’t that wonderful?

Autumn Trails Again

We hung the Autumn Trails quilt on the guest bedroom wall. Isn’t the wall bracket wonderful? Dave designed and built it.

Late Afternoon Walk

It was 82 F here in northern Michigan this afternoon, and this summer, that was news indeed! Dave and I went for one of our customary rambles along a woodland trail and encountered these curiously red capped mushrooms (toadstools?). These were all different specimens clustered in the same area along the trail and measured about 2.5 inches across the cap.

This is neither knapweed nor bee balm, so I don’t know what it is except quite lovely !

IMG_0533

How gray can a mushroom get?

Note size by comparing the toe of my walking shoe:

Several shitaki-esque mushrooms were growing from this decaying tree stump:

They were quite large as shown by this comparison to Dave’s hand:

More Pictures of Daughter’s Faux Clamshell Quilt

Since I have now delivered the finished quilt to my daughter, I feel I can post more detailed pictures of the quilting I did on it. What a beautiful canvas to work on for a machine quilter!
IMG_0483

I decided to follow the clam shell theme with traditional clam shell quilting in the small print squares in the blocks and border and a shell design of my own devising in the white areas.
IMG_0484

I used feathers in the sashing and tiny feathers to “stipple” the background around the large shell quilting.

New/Old Waffle Iron

After attending the Bonnie Hunter quilting workshop in Indy on Friday, August 14, I drove over to Illinois to visit my daughter. She was recently married (Have I mentioned the Double Wedding Ring quilt? I really should post that.), and my new son-in-law. He decided he did not need this vintage (uh-hum) waffle iron since they now have duplicates of several small appliances. So, I took it home Monday (a mere 10 hour drive). It needed a little TLC with the old reliable bottle of Fantastik, but cleaned up nicely.

IMG_0520

It has removable plates, one side for waffles and the other for grilling sandwiches, aka, panninis.

IMG_0518

All set to go

IMG_0519

I plugged her in, and despite a bit of smoking and smelliness, she seemed to fire up and heat up quite well.
I prepared my standard waffle batter from ye olde Betty Crocker Cookbook (a wedding present from 37 years ago, how time flies!)
The dry ingredients:
2 cups whole wheat flour (Betty C used white flour)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

IMG_0521

The wet ingredients:
2 cups buttermilk (I used two cups yogurt/milk mixture this time, since that is what was on hand.)
2 eggs
3/8 cup oil

IMG_0522

Stir that all together, PAM up the griddle, and pour onto the hot griddle. I found that you really need to spread the batter out to the edges on this griddle or you get cornerless waffles:

IMG_0526

I had the iron set to the “dark” setting and let the waffles cook for precisely 3.5 minutes, et voila!

IMG_0525

This recipe made six complete waffles. Here you see only four because my husband and I ate two for breakfast. They were golden brown and delicious with real butter and maple syrup. Sorry, dear son-in-law, but you cannot have this one back!

Quilt Workshop with Bonnie Hunter

Over the weekend, I drove 420 miles to Indianapolis to attend a trunkshow and workshop by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville fame. I stayed Thursday evening at my sister-in-law’s house near Indy and she graciously drove us from her house to the trunk show that evening. Friday morning, I loaded up my gear and drove to Indy again for the workshop. What follows are pictures from show-and-tell of quilts made by class members from Bonnie’s patterns. She has a book out and a blog as well.

Autumn Trails

I just finished this little quilt about a week ago. It is from a pattern by Lori Smith . I bought the pattern in a great quilt shop in Paris, IL, Lori’s Pins and Needles while visiting my daughter last spring. This project had to wait while I finished up the Double Wedding Ring quilt for my daughter’s wedding in July (another story), but as soon as I could, I got right to work on this little guy. I love the appliqued border of “Up North” style figures.
