A Wedding Quilt

IMG_3039

My niece was married this past weekend. I made this quilt for her and her new husband. The overall design is traditionally called “Sunshine and Shadow.” The colors are teal, navy and pale aqua.

Each of the paler colored pathways was quilted with a different “feather” design.

The feather design in the center of the quilt represents their initials “S” and “S-reversed”.

The squiggly design in the dark triangles is actually a spiral.

Hummingbird Happening

Every August the hummingbirds here become very active. They flutter around the feeders excessively; chirp, dive, swoop and generally act aggressive. I caught them on video this year for the first time. Many more appear at the feeder than earlier in the season. Neighbors speculate that these are the fledglings earning their wings! We have been serving up a quart of sugar water per day.

Wonky Baskets

Earlier this summer I took a workshop with Gwen Marston, a world famous quilt artist. She taught the class a technique for creating pieced basket quilt blocks without a pattern and without measuring the fabric. Gwen calls these “liberated baskets.” Also, she suggested ways to put these blocks together so that the completed quilt top would be squared up. The workshop was a lot of fun, and this little wall quilt was the result. Click on her name above to go to her web site where you can buy her book,”Liberated Quilts II”.

Borders Added to Asterisk Quilt Top

I added the 1 1/2 inch dark brown print inner border, the 1/2 inch turquoise batik inner border, and the large floral mitered outer border, so the quilt top is complete.

I have some ideas for the quilting which is the next step, but that will have to wait a little while.

Center of Asterisk Quilt

Asterisk quilt top without borders

When I finished the center of the asterisk quilt, I took this photo with it placed on my living room floor(That’s rug to the left and hardwood and hearth to the right.). The problem I am having with this quilt is obvious: lack of good contrast between background fabrics and the insert fabrics. In this picture for instance, the inserts are barely discernible in some of the blocks.

I deviated from the quilt shown in “Quiltmaker Magazine” by adding a 1/2 inch dark brown print sashing. The inserts are all 1/2 inch too, so this creates a sort of mosaic effect.

I have yet to add two inner borders: one of the dark brown and another of 1/2 inch turquoise batik. Finally, I will add the large floral border. All the fabrics, with the exception of the turquoise, will be Kaffe Fasset fabrics.
